The Soviet military doctrine was based on enormous number of tanks & armoured vehicle attacking through Germany and conquering Europe.
The BRDM armoured vehicle was part of the aggression plans, that luckily never came through.
With speed up to 100 km/h it's primary task was mobile reconnaissance and harassment of foes supply lines. This used to be typical job of light cavalry during earlier centuries.
